More than Meets the Eye

Monday, June 24, 2013

Writing a fashion blog is funny because the people that only know me through my blog just get to see that side of me, the fashion loving side.  Since I don't share much else when I meet people in real life that have read my blog they just assume that I'm consumed by fashion all the time.  Don't get me wrong, I totally am.  I love fashion about as much as the next fashion blogger but with all bloggers, don't assume you know them just because of what they write on their blog.  There is so much to all of us that we don't share, whether on purpose or not, as bloggers I think we can all safely say that we are "more than meets the eye."  When FUZE asked me to share something about my passions and personalities beyond the obvious I loved the topic as it's something that I rarely share on my blog.

Obviously if you've read this blog for awhile you know that I started my own business with my sister almost 2 years ago and that's truly where my passion lies.  I love being an entrepreneur and watching my business grow and seeing us get to our goals and milestones.  It's been amazing, stressful and thrilling all at the same time and I hope to never stop doing what I love.
some of our newest designs!

I've always been very career driven and I think very few people really knew that about me.  When I was in the corporate world I was able to do a lot in a very little time.  I was given advancement opportunities due to my work ethic and the work that I produced and I loved it.  I had big dreams of moving up the ranks of the corporate world and I was able to move up quite rapidly with the support of a lot of very senior people in the company.  But as the years went by I became more and more unsatisfied until the very last year I was at my last corporate job and finally decided that it wasn't the life for me.  And then I left and never looked back.  Of course that's the short story, if I were to write the long version, you'd be reading a novel :)  But basically that's what happened to lead me to where I am today.  I don't regret any of it.  I learned a lot when I was in the corporate world and a lot of skills I was able to bring to my business today so am grateful for my time spent in that world.  I look forward to being a mom but I also know that my career/business will always be a priority to me as well.  I'm struggling with the fact of how I'm going to balance it all but I'm sure I'll figure it out, and I've got my sister as one of the best role models for me as that's exactly what she's doing right now.

Anyway, thanks for letting me share a little piece of me that is rarely seen through this little fashion blog of mine. :)

Life Lately

Thursday, May 16, 2013

Life has been super crazy lately and so posting on the blog will be sporadic but I'm still here and wanted to say hi!  Just an update and sharing photos from my instagram.  If you don't follow me yet, you can follow me here!

Cherishing the moments of being able to take long walks with our dogs.  (I'm almost 23 weeks here but I'm 24 weeks now!).  Wearing a Forever 21 Dress

Last week was a bit tough for me because of the pregnancy.  Even though I still don't look very pregnant (you should see the surprised looks I get all the time when people find out I'm 6 months pregnant).  The weight that I have gained has all gone to my boobs and my belly and all that weight in front is killing my back.  Sleep has been tough, sitting on the couch has been tough, walking has been tough, etc... and I've been a little unhappy about it all.  My super sweet husband has been giving me daily massages and putting up with my sh*t and he also got me a little gift to cheer me up.  I love the bow clutch that he picked out for me.  I just love that he went shopping on his own and picked it out for me as I've never even seen or mentioned this clutch to him before but when I saw it, it was so me, and I love that he knows that about me.  It doubles as a crossbody and has a bow print that you can see on the back.

I had a really great weekend celebrating mother's day with my mom.  Being pregnant has really made me appreciate everything that my mom has done for me and I'm so glad to be so close by and be able to see her whenever I want!

Our business is really taking off, so much so that we got a new office and are in the process of moving!  It's such exciting times to see our little business turn into everything we've envisioned (I mean we are not there quite yet but in less than 2 years, we've had amazing growth.) and having a team of people work for us.  We're also growing so rapidly that we've just hired two more people on our shipping team along with the merchandising intern that my sister is hiring.  Such crazy fun times and I'm loving every minute of it!
Some new bracelets we added to our collection:  Chain Bangle | Pave Bracelet | Enamel Bracelet

We added watches to our designs and I LOVE them!!  The Gold Link & Tortoise watch is my favorite and is selling like crazy.  The colored watches will be on our site in a little bit.  We are still perfecting a few things with the designs on those but get excited because they will be gorgeous!
And then, my husband and I bought a house!  We just closed yesterday and am so in love with our new home.  It's so us and will be perfect for when the baby is here.  So now along with the move for the new office, I have to move our old house into our new house which is quite a daunting task especially because oh yeah, I'm 6 months pregnant and will be 7 months by the time we move everything all in.  Yikes!  So all in all, it's quite an exciting few months for us and I'm sure will be for the next few months and then before I know it the baby will be here.  I'm actually more scared for that part than anything else!  LOL!  I hope you all are having a great week!

My little secret...

Wednesday, April 3, 2013

I've been keeping a lil secret that I can finally reveal!

I'm pregnant!

The baby is due in September and I'm about 4.5 months now.  We will be finding out the sex of the baby soon so we're very excited for that.  Not much will change with the blog except I'm sure you'll be seeing my growing bump in lookbooks.  My husband and I are excited for this next little adventure in our lives and thank you guys for always being so supportive and reading along with my blog!

My Loves

Wednesday, February 13, 2013

My husband and I are approaching our 5 year wedding anniversary so I wanted to capture some photos of us together as we haven't had any since we got married!  Our dogs are such a big part of our lives that I wanted to make sure that we got some photos with them too.  Husband is not too fond of being on the blog (he's not an internet guy at all, he doesn't have a facebook or anything even social media related - the exact opposite of me!) but I had to post these pics because I adore him, adore us and adore our little family.  I can't help but just feel so happy and lucky when I see these pictures.
photos by Miguel Marino

What I'm wearing
First outfit:
Zara Blazer (similar) | J Crew Blouse | Madewell Jeans | Rag & Bone Booties (similar)
Second outfit:
Forever 21 Blazer (similar) | Shop Sosie Blouse (similar) | Juicy Couture dress (worn as a skirt) | DKNY tights | YSL Heels

I wanted photos that captured us but I also wanted to avoid the "engagement" shoot look.  Since my husband and I used to be wedding photographers we've taken more than our fair share of engagement photos and when you're shooting a couple it's easy to kind of fall back into that look and feel .  Our photographer really worked with us to get the kind of shots we wanted.  I'm very happy with the way they turned out.  If you are in Seattle and looking for a photographer, I highly recommend to contact Miguel! (In fact, you might already read his wife's blog, the lovely Carolyn.  I adore them both!)

This year has been amazing.  I am so thankful for the wonderful people that I have in my life, the amazing opportunities that have come my way and just being HAPPY all the time.  After being continually sick for the past few years (and finally, FINALLY! just recently figuring out why I was sick) I have put my health in front of everything else and made me realize that taking care of myself needs to be the most important thing because if I don't take care of myself, how do I expect to take care of others, take care of my business, take care of everything in my life that I want to take care of.  I've made small changes like going to yoga 3 times a week, working out consistently, eating better and just taking the time to work on myself or just enjoy being with myself.  I'm not good with words but I hope that if there are readers out there that are just like me and tries to put everything else but yourself first, please take the time to be good to yourself.  You will find yourself much more happier and at peace than ever.

I wanted to share a few articles that I came across that I bookmark and read often and hope that this can help you guys get a great start to 2013 as well.  I added a few little excerpts from each article but hope you click over to read the full articles.

I think this is something a lot of us deal with and the tips are not anything we don't already know, but great reminders to think about every so often.

5 Tips to Avoid Overextending Yourself from Think Simple Now

I read Erica's blog as she's got great tips for entrepreneurs but I thought that this was a great and relevant article for everyone.  I'm not a facebook person (I use my page for the blog but don't use my personal page so rarely read what my friends are up to - I'd rather just hang out with them in person to find out what they've been up to.) but I do read lots of blogs and end up comparing myself to some bloggers that seem to have the most amazing lives and then all of the sudden start to feel bad about my terribly inadequate life.  I don't feel like that most of the time as I know that I'm lucky to have the life that I have, but sometimes spending too much time reading blogs does that to me.  It's hard not to compare yourself with others but it's something I'm working on.  I like the perspective that Erica took in her post and made me think differently about comparing myself to others.

The Nastiest Habit (That We All Have) from Erica.biz

Marie Forleo is a great inspiration for entrepreneurs and small business owners but I loved her latest video which she's emphasized that the best present you can ever give is your presence.  It emphasizes the holiday season but we need to remember this throughout the year.
I had a few experiences with a friend who, at dinner, just me and him, would check his phone every 2 minutes and would laugh at his phone and make all sorts of emotions and then would finally turn his head back to me and then in the middle of the conversation would become distracted again and look at his phone, hoping to see an incoming text.  It was, to say the least, very annoying.  After those dinners, I promised to never take my phone out in the middle of dinner or whatever I'm doing when I'm with friends and family.  For those of us, especially bloggers, but anyone who is very active in social media, it's something that we've fallen into a habit of checking our phones so often.  And at one point, I can admit I was really bad at it and had to have my husband point out to me how bad it was getting.  I do admit to taking my phone out to take photos every so often but my rule is that I don't instagram/facebook it until I'm at home and not in the middle of dinner.  I do love hanging out with my blogger friends that get the whole social media thing and don't care if we take pics or instagram them but most of my friends are not into social media so don't really understand it and so I try to respect that when I'm with them.

Lately I've been working on finding a good work-life balance and since I work from home it's so easy to work all the time as my work is just right there but I know that when my husband comes home at night, he wants to hang out with me and not his half distracted wife who's needing to check her email or working on our next collection, etc... I try to warn him when I'll be needing to work longer so he can expect it (just like he lets me know when he needs to stay at the office late), but to me, my husband is the most important thing in the world to me and I would never want it to be where my work is or seems to be more imporant than him or our marriage.  After a year of working from home and figuring things out I finally have a good system and a work-life balance that my husband and I are more comfortable with but it's still a struggle and something that I want to improve on.  Anyway, long story but I love the message of the best present you can ever give is your presence so wanted to share it with you all.

Thank you all so much for reading and visiting my blog.  I truly appreciate all your support.  I wish you all health, happiness, love and lots and lots of new shoes for the new year!

Being an entrepreneur

Wednesday, December 12, 2012

Life has been crazy lately and I'm so busy that my head is spinning constantly and I haven't had a moment to rest.  And that is quite literal as I've been back from China for a week and I'm still not on a consistent sleep schedule.  It's more like a "no sleep" schedule, I'm getting about 3 hours a night.  I'm thinking it won't be about January until I actually get some sleep!

I absolutely love being a business owner and feel lucky and blessed to be living my dreams and doing what I love but what I learned from this year is that being a retailer this time of year means getting no rest or vacation starting from November and I suspect all the way through January.  We started our business only about a year and a half ago so last year we were too new to feel the rush of the holiday shopping madness but this year, OH MY.  What a difference a year makes.  This is not me complaining at all, there is nothing more thrilling to be as busy as we are, it's just that this busy-ness truly smacked me in the face as I didn't expect it to come this quick at all!  I get a lot of emails from readers about what it's like to start a business and how I've managed it all and how I made the decision to leave my corporate job to start a business.  I can tell you that it's been rough and it hasn't been easy but every single thing has been worth the risk.  Just seeing what my sister and I (with the help of my parents and brother) have done in this short amount of time, makes me immensely proud and happy.  To see our jewelry on customers and to get wonderful emails from people that enjoy our line is a joy that I never experienced in my corporate life.  In my year and a half of doing this, I've never thought "ugh, 4 more hours left" or "only 3 more days until the weekend." I used to have those thoughts constantly when I was working in the corporate world.  Every day I'm exhausted but happy and thrilled to be doing what I'm doing and I'm so thankful to everyone in my life who has supported me and helped me live out this dream.

Some of our recent press!

To those of you that that are wanting to take this path in life and becoming an entrepreneur I encourage you to start taking the steps to make your dreams a reality.  It's definitely scary and you'll lose sleep over all the risks that you have to take but to finally be living your dreams is the most amazing thing ever.

I don't feel like I'm any kind of expert but with my experience I can tell you that these are a few things that I've realized what has helped me along the way.

super long and wordy post, click through to read more....

1. Be financially ready - When we started the jewelry line, I was still working as a consultant and was doing both jobs.  I knew I wasn't going to do both forever, so I set a goal date of when I wanted to be full time dedicated to my jewelry line and I saved and saved until I knew that I had enough to not have to work X amount of months.  Having a goal date helped put in perspective that this was going to be "real" and that I may have to live without an income for a certain amount of months.  But putting together this plan helped ease my mind and my fears and helped my husband and I know what to expect.

2. Be prepared for the hard times - Yes not getting paid for all the hard work that you've put in sucks but remember this is your business, not just some job that you clock in and out of and expect a paycheck every two weeks. If you put yourself in the right mindset and knowing that you won't see a profit for awhile, it's a lot easier to go through and you can put it in the back of your mind.  Plus you can use it as motivation to get to where you want to be!

3. If you have a business partner - Communication, communication, communication - My sister and I have always had a good relationship and we've definitely become closer with the start of the business but with that said, we've definitely ran into a few bumps a long the road.  Nothing major of course but all that could be (and is) solved with better communication.  Us living in two different cities and time zones probably doesn't help but even if we lived in the same city and worked in the same office, communication is always important no matter what.  Just being sure that your business partner is on the same page at all times is essential.  To us this means, not just understanding and being on the same page about long term goals, but short term and daily/weekly goals as well.  If you are running the business on your own or even with a small staff, make sure you have set your goals and your staff understands your goals!  It's so much easier when everyone is working towards the same thing.

4. Network like you've never networked before - Not only has networking helped us grow like crazy but networking has also helped me meet so many other amazing female entrepreneurs that I can get together with and bounce ideas off each other and learn from each other.  When you network, your community doesn't just grow a little, it grows a lot!  You never know who knows who and who could end up helping you in which way.  I've been connected through friends of friends or co-workers of someone that I met through networking, or even just acquaintances of a networking friend that happened to be able to help out.  Networking through my blog has been amazingly helpful as well!  I've even done some "cold call" networking where I've found out that somebody works at a certain place and I just wrote them an email or called them to introduce myself.  It's crazy just how knowing a few people and asking the right questions can lead you to so many more opportunities your way.

5. This.

Believe in yourself.  Create your own opportunities.  Nobody else is going to do it for you.

And really lastly I couldn't have done any of this without my support system.  My husband has been amazing through all of this.  I worked through the entire Thanksgiving week and in the past month, I've probably only spent a few full days with him as I left for China and came back but now spend most of my nights and weekends working with our shipping team and don't get home until after he's asleep.  He doesn't like being away from me this much but he also understands that it's what I need to do right now.  Through everything the business has been through, he's supported me 100% and although the decisions are mine, having him behind me has been amazing.  The same with my family.  Along with my sister, who has been amazing to work with and partner with, my parents and brother have been a huge part of this business from the start and to have the support of our family I think just motivates us all to go bigger and do better each and every day.  I've been through some rough days but talking with my family on those rough days help me find a different perspective and understand why we all are doing this.

My business isn't just my job or my career, it's my life and I couldn't see it any other way.  I don't talk about this topic a lot as I do try to keep my blog and business separate (although it's a fashion/style blog so of course I will incorporate it in some way! I just don't talk about the business side of it so much.) but if you want to follow someone with fantastic advice about being an entrepreneur, check out Tasha at Imperfect Concepts.  Her Instagram is always full of great advice and what books/articles to read.  Plus she's just the sweetest, coolest chick I've met on the internet!

Sunday Sunday

Thursday, April 19, 2012

My husband and I take our weekends very seriously. Seriously in that we don't get to see each other as much during the week as we used to so we savor our time together on the weekends and I look forward to the weekend more than when I was at an office job and I just wanted the weekend to come so I didn't have to be at the office.  Now that I work from home and work basically every hour that I'm not asleep my work life has just simply become "life" but I'm enjoying every moment of it.  I've never imagined that I could do this (be a small business owner/jewelry designer) but here I am doing it and really truly appreciating this time in my life.

Our Sundays are usually busy doing typical errands but to spend time doing even these mundane things with my husband is something that I look forward to.  I recently took my camera along for a typical Sunday for us and thought I'd share!

We either go out for a full on brunch or just a coffee and pastry so this day we decided it would be Coffee and Pastry day so went over to Grand Central Bakery.  Hubs got the seasonal danish (that you saw here when we got it last time) and I went with a cinnamon bun this time.  (That's my DIY glitter clutch in the corner.)
Next stop was Trader Joe's.  Only the best grocery store EVAR.  Seriously, why is this place so fun to go to?  My favorite section, of course is the wine section.  I always buy wine for the week and usually try to pick out something new and different but stock up on our favorites too.
We are totally the people that go to multiple grocery stores because I'm sort of picky about produce and although I adore Trader Joe's, I'm not as big of a fan of their produce.  Which brings us to Metropolitan Market which has the best produce section.  When I walk in there, I'm enticed to buy carrots and celery just because they make it look so pretty.  Don't know how they do it but they make their produce displays so nice that you want to buy everything, but not just looks, their produce really is the best in terms of freshness and taste.

Their flower section is always beautiful too.  I love perusing their flowers and deciding which ones to bring home for the week.
Gourmet raspberry marshmallows!  Um, yeah, that's why I must stay away from their bakery/sweets section because it's filled with delightful things like this that cost an arm and a leg but so hard for me to resist.
And just some of the produce I brought home.  I couldn't resist the beautiful meyer lemons and made lemon bars from them.  Sidenote: the best recipe is from the The Grand Central Baking Book(yup the same place where we started the day from!) and these Sumo oranges where I haven't seen anywhere else, were the sweetest most delicious oranges I've ever had.  We went back the next weekend to stock up on some more!
So there you go, a very boring Sunday but still fun to me :)  What are your Sunday's like?  Do you do all your errands like I do or do you just veg on the couch?  I do have to say though that our Sunday's are very dependent on the weather, if it's gross and rainy, the couch is the best place to be!

Happy New Year!

Tuesday, January 3, 2012

Our new year's eve and new year's day was quite low key and uneventful but still spent with the ones I love so that's all I need to be happy.  (Above are a few of the accessories I wore.  I still believe in dressing up even for a low key night!)  Wishing everyone the best for 2012 and although 2011 was a fabulous year, I think that the best is yet to come... :)  I have lots of hope for 2012!

Unfortunately, I'm a bit under the weather and mixed with some highly stressful things going on in my life so blogging is going to take a back seat for a bit but being that we are in the midst of creating our next jewelry collection, I've been trying to get all the creative juices flowing and thus started a tumblr full of inspirations.  (Would love for you to follow if you have a tumblr and let me know yours so I can follow back!).

The tumblr is more for just pretty photos and anything that will inspire me but of course, my first love for all things inspiration and fun things found on the internet will always be located on my Pinterest.  Which, BTW, I have started a board for lovelies wearing t+j Designs so if you have a photo of you wearing our jewelry, please email/tweet/facebook me the link on your blog or the photo and I'll pin it to our Pinterest board!  I love seeing our jewelry on all of you guys!

And lastly, I've started a tumblr for t+j Designs as well.  It's a place to find inspiration on how to wear jewelry pieces and just generally gorgeous jewelry.  Sales announcements and other news will be posted on there as well!

So I may not be around here as much but I'll still be pinning and tumbling away.  And of course,  you'll be able to find me on my regular places, twitter and facebook.  See you in a week (or maybe even sooner!) :)

Oh and I promise, I will come back and announce the winners of the giveaways as soon as I can.  I just have to finish entering all the youtube entries into the pool of entries and then I will select the winners.  Thanks everyone!
