{WW} Nothing to Hide: Oversized Dressing

It's no secret than when it comes to dressing, I like to borrow from the boys.Oversized silhouettes offset by slim-fitting tops or bottoms are so effortlessly chic — not to mention far more comfy than their binding counterparts — that I just can't get enough. Case in point: The oversized coat. Now I don't know if you've noticed, but my outerwear is increasingly getting bigger and bigger... In fact, you'd be hard-pressed to find a style blog out there that hasn't adopted the trend. So when it comes to incorporating jumbo coats into your wardrobe, I thought I would show you two of my favourite combos: Casual vs. professional.


Boyfriend jeans- Blank NYC | contrast sleeve coat- ASOS

The first look is a weekender's dream, with loose layers and zero-to-no effort for maximum chicness. Wear it for coffee with the girls, shopping or a trip to the library, and you'll look as good as you feel.

  Houndstooth coat- SheInside | pencil skirt- Ellen Tracy

Look two is a little more polished, perfect for the 9-5er who wants to look put-together on the go. Swap the skirt for a form-fitting dress or tailored pant, and you'll be the cutest girl at the office.

{Wardrobe Wednesday} Lips Rings

This Wardrobe Wednesday features a save or splurge component which doesn't quite apply to me because — let's face it — I had to go be all greedy and buy both. To be fair, I ordered the CC Skye version online before I knew Forever 21 carried a fun, Lulu Frost-inspired version for a fraction of the price. Woe is me. Regardless, I felt the need to have both. Because really, after shelling out over 100 big ones for a trend item, what's five more.

The verdict? Despite the aforementioned trend (read: fleeting) nature of the design, I actually much prefer the CC Skye version. It's smaller, more streamlined and far more flattering to wear, translating to 20x more use than it's inexpensive counterpart... So on a cost-per-wear basis, the CC Skye version is actually a way better deal, right? Oh come on, humour me.

{Wardrobe Wednesday} The Féline Beanie

 

Something about Brian Lichtenberg's quirky, tongue-in-cheek approach to apparel design has captured the hearts of many a fashion phile, earning him a cult following for his Homiés, Ballin and — my personal favourite — Féline Meow roster of designer-inspired logos. Equal parts homage to, and rejection of, the Hermès, Balmain and Céline power labels from which the line was built, Lichtenberg's tees, sweatshirts (I have my eye on this one) and head wear are undeniably undeniable.

 

I don't know about you guys, but for me, it's official: A new obsession is born... So burrrr-ing (get it?) on the Lichtenbergs!

Shopping Picks for Fall

I can't believe it's almost the end of September but I’m so looking forward to fall fashion and layering up again. Boots, jackets, and sweaters are all things that make fall so great! Some of my picks for this season:

1.) Madewell Bien Fait Sweatshirt Chic sweatshirts are hard to find, but they can be a girl’s best friend. Cute and comfy, I’d pair this with a glam skirt for a relaxed chic look.
2.) Anthropologie Coer PulloverYou all know how much I love prints. These hearts are irresistible and an easy way to dress up your jeans and sweater look.
3.) J. Crew Beaded Chambray Shirt  The beads are a really cute updated version of your classic chambray. I wear chambray shirts year-old so this is a great dressed-up version.
4.) J. Crew Double-cloth Moto Jacket Motorcycle jackets are usually too edgy for me, but I love this ladylike version from J.Crew. It’s classic, but with a slight edge.

Helmet Lang Villous Jersey JacketThe perfectly draped jacket -- it’s cool and sophisticated at the same time. I love the jacket open or zipped up.
Club Monaco Eloise Textured Wool Sweater I’m always on the lookout for the perfect fall sweater – lightweight, cozy, and a relaxed fit. This sweater looks like it fits all the requirements, it’s a great foundational piece for building out all your fall outfits.
Nordstrom Boucle Knit Robe Cardigan  Every girl needs at least a couple cozy sweaters. I love this oversized version. Just throw it over your summer dresses, add a pair of boots and you’re good to go. 

 

Topshop Contrast Panel Shirtdress  Black & white never goes out of style. Pair these with a pair of heels or your favorite ankle boots and you can wear this to work, or out with friends after.  

Zara Coated Pleated Skirt  Love the sheen on this pleated skirt! I also like how the model paired it with a button up and ankle boots for a dressed up day look.

Zara Gold Brocade Sweater Dress  Gorgeous brocade print, and it’s a perfect transitional piece. I can imagine wearing this a lot of different ways, with short or tall boots for the fall and just adding tights for the winter.

{Wardrobe Wednesday} The Leather Cap...

Remember a little something called Wardrobe Wednesdays? New readers to AiF won't be familiar with it (it last ran in August 2012!), but basically it was a weekly feature where I would highlight beloved items from the depths of my closet... Basically a "sartorial show-and-tell," if you will. So after much thought (and a little shopping), I thought it might be fun to resurrect the series!

First up — the hat. More specifically, the leather baseball cap. It seems like these badboys are popping up in every store, website and, well, head lately, making them the perfect inaugural (if something can be inaugural twice) WW item. Not to have a total 90's Janet Jackson moment on you or anything, but this is a look that I'm planning on wearing the heck out of this fall.

From oversized sweaters and jeans, to more polished, dresses-n-blazers kinds of days, this Bop Basic beauty is going to be making appearances left, right and center... Kind of like the Kardashian of headwear.

As you know, I’m a big fan of colors and prints. But, every closet needs a good mixture of neutrals to complement all the wild colors and patterns. I’ve been trying to find ways to find “fun” neutrals if you know I mean. And I’m so glad metallics are in style! They’re a great version of neutrals – they’re versatile, pair well with other colors, and they’re super-fun as well!

• KORS Michael Kors Snakeskin Sandals Your classic sexy sandal in a gorgeous gold snakeskin. Pair this with all your evening outfits, and you’re set! Another great option here.
• Loeffler Randall Reina Heel  The scallop detailing on this heel is adorable! Wear this and be prepared for lots of compliments.
• J Crew Lillian Metallic Low Wedge I think this is the perfect shoe for summer. It has a low wedge for comfortable walking, and will go with almost all your cute summer dresses.
• Cynthia Vincent Flora  If you can’t do the full-on metallic trend, this is a great option. The metallic complements the black really well, and I also like it in the coral color!

Shop the trend: Minty Madness

I'm obsessed with mint!  I've been gravitating towards everything that is mint hued and want to wear it all the time.  Been doing some online window shopping and loving all these pieces.  I think I'll be adding this blouse to my closet as it's super cute for summer but will transition easily for fall and I'm in love with the little mint and lace dress, it's so cute!  I didn't add this to the below but in love with this adorable bow blouse (and it's under $20!)

And the easiest way to add a little mint to your wardrobe is with accessories.  You can tell how much my sister and I are loving mint as we have quite a few mint pieces in our jewelry line but I gotta say it's because this color is so versatile.  It looks great with most skin tones and you can dress it down with jeans and a tee or wear it with a cute little white dress for a night out!  The Rebecca Minkoff bag is a bit brighter but I'm still loving the color and the quilting on the bag.

Whenever I think of nautical-inspired clothing, I think of really chic French women. Classic blue stripes, crisp whites and red scarves all come to mind. They’re a must for every woman’s wardrobe and I love how they’re classic and attention-grabbing at the same time. Check out my nautical picks:

1. Asos Dropwaist Dress  I love the flirty feel of this dress. I actually ordered this dress a few months ago and loved it on but it wasn't going to grow well with the bump so I returned it.  But I did love it!  It’s a great layering piece for all your accessories as well!
2. Toms University Stripe Sandal  Chic and charitable. These look really comfortable and of course, they’re for a great cause – every pair of Toms purchased means another pair will go to a child in need.
3. Splendid Stripe Maxi Dress  I’m so glad maxi dresses are still in style. They’re comfortable and dressed up at the same time!
4. Kate Spade Carmelita Wedge  I’m a big fan of bows, and these are irresistible! Espadrilles are perfect for summer, wear this with an LWD for a great summer look

1. Oasis Nautical Spot ScarfThe polka dots are a cute take on the nautical theme. Scarves are a must in Seattle, as the weather is so temperamental. Throw this in your bag for an accessory pick-me-up!
2. Michael Kors Stripe Boatneck TopMost ladies have the classic blue-striped top, but I love this fun orange one. Wear it with white shorts or your pencil skirt for an office look.
3. J. Crew Collection Cashmere Anchor Sweater  Sure, this might be super obvious, but the anchor gives this classic striped shirt a nice twist. I’d wear this with a pencil skirt, or cute shorts for the summer.
4. Forever 21 Cuffed Shorts  The buttons are a great detail on these shorts. I can imagine this looking really great with a peter-pan collar top or just your classic striped shirt for a great nautical look.

Florals are one of my favorite prints to wear – they’re flirty, feminine and a great way to make a statement! And depending on the type of floral, the print can be bold, girly or even modern. Either way, they’re super versatile and pair well with other prints or the basics in your closet. Here are some of my favorite picks for this summer:

{1} Tibi Sleevless Yoked TopLove both the blue and green colors of this top. The slight peplum shape is also really flattering. 
{2} Hawaiian Punch A Line Skirt  Usually Hawaiian prints border on tacky, but this is so pretty! Plus, it’s a floral printed leather skirt – how cool is that?
{3} Zara Floral Print Blazer  Such a cute blazer! And I like how the model paired it with a simple outfit, making it the statement piece. Another great option from Zara here.
{4} J. Crew Toothpick JeanIn love with this tulip print. It’s feminine and graphic at the same time!

{6} Madewell Tailored Shorts in Modflower  Sometimes florals scream garden party, but this is the complete opposite. Really like the modern feel of these shorts. They’re great for your dressed up shorts and tee look.
{7} Topshop Gwenda Pointed PumpsThe classic pump, but with a pretty floral print! I’d wear this with my LWD for summer nights out.  These floral/striped ones are also so cute!

{c} Tropical Print Shift This floral dress screams vacation, so even if you’re not on a beach, at least you can feel like it!

Neon Love

When neon became trendy last year, I thought it would come and go, but thankfully it’s stuck around, and I love it! Neon is super fun and a great way to make your outfits pop. It can also seem intimidating at first, but it’s actually really wearable! With summer around the corner, I’ve been looking at incorporating more and more into my wardrobe.

Vacation on the brain

The weather has been unbelievably beautiful lately, and it’s making me dream of my next vacation. Vacation season is right around the corner, and whether you’re planning to relax on a beach, see the sights in Europe or trek through Asia, you’ll need to bring the right outfits. I’m thinking easy dresses, versatile pieces and of course the right accessories! Here are some of my favorite picks – wherever your next vacation might take you:

1. Ruffle Wrap Dress - The relaxed fit on this wrap dress will make it super comfortable! Love the bright color – you could wear this during or day, and dress it up for going out at night.
2. Melanie Dress  T-shirt dresses are a traveler’s best friend, just put it on and go! The print on this one is so pretty, and you can also easily transition this one from day to night
3. Caftan Cover-Up - I admittedly don't get much use out of caftans but I love them!  I love how chic they make you look beachside or poolside.  Plus you don't feel so self conscious when you're wearing a bikini and get to cover it up with something so cute.
4. Printed Henley - How cool is this print? It pretty much embodies vacation. Wear this with shorts and sandals during the day and you’re set.

Colorful Cross Body Bags

Earlier this week, I posted about how much I’ve been enjoying my Target cross-body bag, and it made me think about getting more to add to my collection. Cross-body bags are perfect for the warmer months when you just want to be light and not carry so much stuff! Here are some of my picks at different price points:

1. IIIBeCa by Joy Gryson – Church Street Envelope Bag  Super-cute bag for the summer. Plus, all IIIBeCa bags are hand-crafted of vegetable-tanned leather and a portion of the proceeds go to charity.
2.  Tinley Road – Mika Can’t really beat this price. I really like the raspberry color and the cute gold lock on the front. Very similar to this Kate Spade one.
3. TopShop – Faux Leather Mini Satchel Love this periwinkle color.  Love the handles so you can choose to carry it across your body or as a cute satchel.

JCrew – Tartine Purse This bag is so chic and versatile. It looks like a great size – not too big, not too small – and I like that it’s so sleek and classic-looking.

3.1 Phillip Lim Mini-Pashli Satchel The Pashli is a favorite for a while now, but I almost like the Mini-Pashli a little better. The details are what really make this bag, the two zippers in the front, the way the sides expand, and the hardware.
Loeffler Randall – Rider Mini Mixed Media Bag This bag will definitely get you noticed. It has a great combination with the floral print, and the classic shape. (Tip: Also part of the Saks Fifth Avenue Sale – 25% off!)
Stella McCartney – Falabella Cross Body Bag This is the cross-body version of the regular Falabella shoulder bag. The chain all around makes it a little edgy, but the pink color still keeps it girly!

Polka Dot Picks!

If you’ve read my blog, then you know that I love polka dots. They’re a great pattern, because they make a big impact, while still being versatile enough to wear with almost everything. I’ve been seeing a lot of this trend as I shop, and wanted to share some of my picks!

Tops:
(1) Madewell – Linen Racerback Tank in Polka Dot This is a great tank top to wear with shorts or skirts during the warmer months. Polka dots can go retro quickly, but the racerback cut makes this fresh and modern. 
(2) Anthropologie – Piped Peplum Blouse  Peplums are still really trendy, and this is a great version. Plus, this top comes in a regular or petite sizes! 
(3) DVF – Fariba Hot Fix DressThis dress is definitely a splurge, but I can imagine wearing this all year round! The polka dots on this dress are actually pearlized studs, which makes it really special. Wear this with flats or heels during the summer, and tights and boots for the colder months.
(4) Anthropologie – Dotted Clara Blouse  Polka dots and peter pan collars – two things I am really into right now. This is a great blouse to dress up your jeans and t-shirt look.

Bottoms:
(1) Forever 21 – Polka Dot Ankle PantsSuper cute, these look retro and fresh at the same time.
(2) Forever 21 – Polka Dot Skinny JeansI love how the polka dots on these are a similar shade to the color of the jeans, so it’s really subtle and cute. Plus, these are really affordable, and come in a bunch of different colors.

I’ve been seeing the Valentino Rockstud Pump everywhere, and I love how the studs make the shoe cool and sexy at the same time.

It’s the perfect mix of girly and cool, so I’ve been looking for stud details on other items to get the same look:

(1) Vince Camuto – Tamma Flat - The scalloped details on this flat make them super girly, and then the studs edge them up a bit. I’d wear them with jeans and a cute top for the perfect weekend look.
(2) TopShop – Millicent Stud Boots - I’ve been looking for some neutral-colored ankle boots to wear with dresses and shorts during the summer. The studs on these are subtle and they’re really affordable!
(3) Steve Madden – Graanite Flat- A friend of mine has these loafers and they are super cute in person. They’re definitely a glamorous version of the loafer trend.
(4) Zara – Studded Flat Sandal - These are a cool take on a gladiator sandal. They’re a lot edgier, and I would wear them with a sweet dress during the summer to get that girly and cool look.

I have a slight crush on these shoes.  I'm obsessed with pointy pumps and I LOVE nude pumps like nobody's business.  Love the stud detail and that they went with the same color studs instead of a contrast which I think makes them a bit more classier.

(1) Asos – Oasis Studded Scalloped DressScallops and studs seem to be a great combination. I love the color of this dress, and I think you could easily wear it during the day or at night.  
(2) Asos – Only Floral Denim Shirt This floral top is a cute take on a chambray top. I don’t have a floral denim top yet, and the studs on the collar are a cute detail.
(3)  Asos – A Wear Studded Edge to Edge Cardigan  The studs on this cardigan are subtle, but make it really stand out.  I could imagine wearing this during the summer with a cute dress.
(4) Forever 21 - Studded Peter Pan Collar I've been wearing a lot of peter pan collars lately.  I find that they look great on their own but also adds a different element when worn underneath a sweater or cardigan with just the collar peeking out. 

Shop the Trend: Lace Shorts

I saw this outfit on Nordstrom and I fell in love!  First, I can't wait until some warm weather to actually wear shorts and second I love lace everything but those shorts are to die for!  They're a bit pricey though, so went hunting for some better priced options.

The faux leather shorts with the lace trim is a fun option if you don't want to go to girly.  The white shorts look cuter on than in this photo.  I like how they flare out a little so it's kind of like a skirt.  And the  TopShop shorts are the best priced out of these three.  Plus I like that they are a little bit longer in length.

I'm usually not one for words or big graphics on my clothes but lately have been noticing lots of cute tops that I just can resist.  I just put in an order for the heart sweater (it looks super similar to my J Crew one) and the heart and stripes sweater so you may be seeing those on me soon!

Shop the Trend: Printed Pants

Now that winter is over, I’ve been slowly transitioning my closet back to the warmer months. I’m looking forward to wearing lots of bright lightweight clothing again, and especially love wearing printed bottoms. They’re a great way to add some color and impact to any outfit, and they’re so easy – just add a neutral top and you’re ready to go!

This season has lots of great options, and I’ve been doing quite a bit of window shopping…

(1) Madewell - Ever since I saw Jean of Extra Petite wearing this skirt, I have totally fallen in love with map prints. They’re so cute, and a great conversation starter! 
(2) Gap- The Gap always has some great options for pants since they usually have petite and tall sizes. The scale of the flowers on the pants are small enough to make them really versatile, so if you’re new to this trend, this is a great piece to start with.
(3) Club Monaco- These remind me so much of spring! The blossoms are super cute and they’d look great with a button-up top for work.
(4) Loft - I love polka dots, and the polka dots on these pants are so unique! Yellow is a great color, and the jacquard dots give it a luxe feel. Plus, I have a feeling the cropped pants mean no hemming for petite ladies.

If you're not into the printed trend, I love these options as well to mix up your wardrobe a bit.

(1) Zara - If you can get away with wearing colored pants at work, I’d definitely go for these. They’re really polished and you could easily wear them from day to night.
(2) Club Monaco - Love these tuxedo pants – they’re super sophisticated and can add instantly polish to your look. Plus, they’re in one of my favorite colors, mint! Also love the black and white option for a more classic look.

If you follow me on instagram you may have seen that I raided Target's Valentine's section as they have a bunch of cute dachshund stuff!  There was not much left at the Target I went to (I seriously bought everything they had) but they have it online now.

Colored Lace for New Year's Eve

When I'm flipping through magazines, I tend to tear out a lot of pages of stuff that I like (I do this because I try to toss magazines as soon as I'm done reading them or else I would hoard a million magazines.) and recently I've been tearing out pages on colored lace and I'm now on the hunt for them!  I'm thinking instead of going sparkles and sequins like I usually do for New Year's Eve, I'm going to do a fun color lace!

I love this one but they are out of my size.  On it's own it's alright but with the addition of the right accessories, it's so glam!  I'm loving the color and thinking that it would be a cute summer wedding dress too.

Erin Fetherston - love this gorgeous coral color and if you can't tell I'm a fan of long sleeve dresses.  I love the mixture of the lace with the silky skirt
Milly - this gray lace is so pretty.  I'd wear the blouse version of this too.  I think paired just like how they have it and a cream/off white blazer would be a great look.   (on another note, love this Milly lace top too!)
DVF - I'm not a huge fan of body hugging dresses but I do like the shape and the pretty color.  It is easy to just add a jacket or even a cozy sweater to change up the look and hide the flaws that a body hugging dress like this might highlight on its own.
T Bags - more casual than the rest but I think it would still work well for a New Year's Eve party.  I'd add some glam, blingy jewels (like this statement necklace), gold heels and a gold cutch.

I found some great casual looks too.  Love this top, love this look!  I would do a different skirt, probably this faux leather pleated skirt but still it's so cute!
